is there a God up there?Phillip nodded slowly, automatically glancing at the closed door out of which said young woman had disappeared. He thought over Julian's concerns, and wondered if he really cared enough to answer the younger man honestly.
"I think you have done the right thing," he replied carefully. "You can take the weight of the whole world on your shoulders, but in the end people have to make their own decisions. All we can do is catch them if, and when, they fall, try to help them back on their feet, no matter how many times it happens."
He smiled sadly, rubbing his hand wearily across his face. He had gotten hardly any sleep the night before, having spent most of it worrying about his own state of mind.

Dahlia blinked, and then shook her head. What? He was giving in like that, she folded her arms and looked at Donn dumbfounded. Dahlia felt the need to be truthful, Donn never gave in that easy, she looked at him hard, he didn't seem exhausted, but there was something he was hiding.
She looked at Kenny, "Kenny your cellphone is in the room upstairs, and there's a bag, if the cops come I don't want to be caught with it". Kenny looked at her like she was speaking Chinese and folded his arms, and then shook his head going back to the halfway house. When she heard the doors close she leaned in the car, and looked at Donn. "Look, I don't like to point fingers when I don't have proof Donn, but something happened last night. I think I know who is accusing me and what he is saying, and some of it is true, but he's not telling you everything".
She gripped her jaw, letting her guard, letting him read her like an open book, but there was something she didn't let him read, something she kept hidden within herself. She looked down, not looking him in the eye as she spoke. "Daniel had me do a job last night, after I went home from the club. He came up to my apartment and handed me paperwork and said 'deliver this, donn's orders, no questions'. Look, that informant, I followed all of the protocols, he knew way too much Donn, he knew how we work, the codes, everything. If that informant was comprised, someone is feeding the Russians information. You know its not me, why the hell would I do it, I don't give a damn about money and the Russians only have one use for women, women are no use unless they're having babies or bent over for some trick".
She looked into his blue eyes, she was playing a dangerous game, telling him the truth, but she actually looked more worried about the fact there was a rat in the organization then her own safety.
Her head throbbed and she gingerly touched the cut on her head and took a deep breath as the world spinned for a moment. She looked at him worried, but she was also reading him, she was about to take a risk, for more then one reason. "Donn, none of this would have happened if you trusted me, you know I'm the only one who doesn't give a damn about your money, you need to put me above Eric, put me in a position that I can question what the suits try to tell me to do, where I can keep a better eye on things. Last night wouldn't have happened if you put more faith in me."
She looked in his eyes again. Would he trust her? She wasn't sure, but she had to try. "Look, if your willing to trust me completely, I'll come with you, but last night is just going to happen again if you don't let me help you keep an eye on things, I know for a fact that I'm the only one in your little cartel that can't be paid off to look the other way. Kenny can't be paid off, but he wouldn't stop an assassin from putting a bullet in you".
--
Kenny came into the halfway house, putting up his hands again. "Dahlia said she left a bag and my cellphone in here, I just want to grab it for her, please" he asked in a non-threatening tone.

Julian eyed Kenny a moment, unsure of whether to let him pass, but ultimately offered a slow nod and pointed to the stairs.
"Her is the second room on the right, up those steps." Phillip was right, you had to let people make their own decisions. The best he could do was be there incase Dahlia fell.
"Is she planning on leaving then?" Julian asked Kenny the question bluntly, absently watching the door while waiting for an answer.

is there a God up there? As the worried looking man ran up the stairs, Phillip noticed another figure approaching, this one a mere boy in looks, but his demeanor one of an old man. He also asked for the girl... Dahlia. It would seem many people were looking for her today. Surprised that the young man hadn't noticed her outside by the flash car, Phillip stepped forward.
"You seem agitated," he spoke soothingly, reaching out to place a calming hand on his shoulder. "Would you like to come inside and sit for a while? Perhaps we can find you something to drink?"
As he spoke he raised an eyebrow at Julian, silently asking permission to take charge of the boy. He didn't want to step on any toes, but at the same time Julian looked worried himself, and would probably appreciate some of that worry being taken out of his hands.
"Your friend... Dahlia is it?" the priest continued, ducking his head a little to force the boy to look at him."She is quite safe here you know. You have nothing to worry about."
He prayed that it was true, but also that God would forgive the small white lie. In truth, he was unsure whether the girl was safe. There was a strange atmosphere here, almost as though the sun had gone in.

Tyson looked at the man. He was agitated? More like worried. He knew that if he didn't report soon, someone was going to get hurt.
Tyson stiffened when Phillip touched his arm. He shrugged the hand off. He remained silent to the offer of a drink.
'Your friend, Dahlia that is... SHe's quite safe here you know. You have nothing to worry about.' The Priest said, looking Tyson in his eyes. Tyso stared at him, wondering whether he should respond. Clearly, the priest had forgotten, no ones ever safe. "I doubt it. How could she be safe? I should have never left."
Tyson's composure went from looking tired to sick. He had pushed himself too far.

Kenny sighed and shook his head, rubbing his face. "I don't know" said Kenny to Julian. "I thought she was going to convince the boss to let her stay, and he did say she could stay, but then she gave me a look, and asked me to get her bag, I think she might go with the boss, she's young and stupid, and loyal to a man who's just going to use her, I never had children, so I can't tell you what her intentions are, other then to fustate me and remind me of how old I'm getting". He was tired, and the lines of his face seemed to deepen.
"Look, if she leaves with him now, I'm going to try to convince her to come back soon. That girl won't last much longer on drugs, she has a dangerous job and everytime she's doped up, she makes it easier for someone to snuff her".
Kenny looked at the young kid who was looking for her. He turned around and came up to him, looking him up and down. "Dahlia works with me, I know her friends, and you, aint one of them. Why are you looking for her". Kenny took out a gun but didn't aim it at him, "You a Russian looking for an easy kill?" he growled. Someone had tried to burn Dahlia only a few hours ago, perhaps the word on the street was that she was alive, he didn't know.
"What do you want with Doll?" he asked the young boy. Kenny was an old thug, and he had an intimidating presence when he was angry, which was so different from his friendly, quirky aura when he wasn't, but Kenny was old fashioned, Dahlia was a viper like him, and in a gang you protected your own.

Tyson glared at Kenny, his face, to held the pain of the world. He debated whether it was a good idea to tell him. All Tyson knew was that Dahlia needed help, and Tyson was there to help her.
Of course, his job was to get the dirt on Donn's gang, but at the time he didn't even register the thought.
"I don't need to tell you my whole life story. Yesterday I wasn't a Russian, today I am. They dragged me back in, saying I knew too much. I just need to see that she's all right. I'll give up all my weapons, if you want me too."
He didn't trust Kenny, and Kenny sure as hell didn't trust him. How had he gotten in this? Oh right, because he wanted to be better then all the rest. He wanted to be at the top, not at the bottom, fighting for scraps.
Greed, and Power.
Like toy soldiers, they all fall down. One after another.
The young teenager was close to just breaking. It felt like he was already bursting at the seams. Something deep inside of him to keep on moving. Maybe it was God, or his daughter, but something told him that, maybe someone would help him.
I guess you could call Tyson a warrior, a solider fighting in a never ending battle. The problem was, he was a Russian now, being drafted into a war he never even wanted in the first place.
Who was protecting him?

Kenny laughed, aimed his gun for a moment, then put it away sighing. Kenny was old enough to be his father, Kenny was too old for this game. He looked at him, "Why in...no-one's name" he quickly corrected himself, not wanting to offend the priests, "would I tell you anything about Doll? You're a Russian, the enemy." Kenny folded his arms and looked at the kid. Kenny was to Tyson as an old alpha wolf was to a newborn pup. Kenny had been playing this game for ten years, and he was around Angel Falls before Rebus had decided peace with the Russians was financially more beneficial, and it was easier to deal with the cops when there was more then one crime lord running around, not that the cops knew Rebus was anything more then a businessman with a playboy attitude.
"Please, tell me what grand explanation that you should be hanging around little doll? Go back to your block before one of my co-workers see you and off you, you're awfully close to my boss's territory, and he doesn't like unwanted guests in his territory".
Kenny's kind nature was tempered by the cold steel that had been implanted when his sister died. Kenny felt a desire to take revenge on the kid, but he was just a kid, he was likely in dipers or elementary school when they took his sister. "Someone is setting up Dahlia, saying she works for the Russians, you want to help her, find who is setting her up and bring them to my boss" he said.

Tyson looked at, him, and nearly flinched when he pointed the gun at him. His new gun was in his back pocket, Tyson made no move to grab it, or even achnolage it's presence. To Tyosn it was the Devil's working. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't.
An explanation? "I came here, looking for sanctuary, trying to escape and I saw her. I recongized her from the gang, and she looked like she needed help. I sat down, and.. we talked. At the time, like I said, I wasn't in the Russains, I was free.." He let his voice trail off into nothing.
It's a sin to try and help a girl? Only in Angel Falls.. Considering either they are a prostitute, a pole dancer, a crack head with two kids and no money, or they were in a gang. Lovely.
Of course, an enemy, worthless in there eyes, worthless in anyones eyes. The nametag that hang from his neck 'the underdog' it read. He was the underdog, never quite good enough.
"If it's the only way I can help her." He replied, almost coldly. The constant image of him, turning both Kenny and Dahlia into the russians plauged his mind, but he shoved the thoughts away. He was trying to change, it was just so hard!

Kenny looked at the kid and shook his head. He was reading the kid, he hadn't yet figured out to hide his emotions, to put on a mask, so that others couldn't read what was going through his mind. "You two should get along fine, both of ya come here looking for sanctuary and both of you go right back to the boss" he grumbled, clear agitation in his voice. He stepped forward, in close to the kid, "Tell your boss, if he tries to go for Dahlia, it won't matter what Rebus says, we'll come for him, and kill any Russian that gets in our way." He stepped back from the kid and went upstairs.
He grabbed the backpack and the phone, and the pills sitting on the desk and came down. "Thanks" he said to Julian, "Dahlia might be back if she doesn't come inside" he gripped his jaw, he knew better then to tell Dahlia's secrets without her consent, but Dahlia had confided in Kenny, he knew about her past, about her demon.
"Look" he said looking at Julian, "she has a demon, a shadow that haunts her, she can't get clean because of something that happened a few years ago, she refuses to face it, and when it becomes to much, she gets high to forget. Her name is Dahlia Lianson, would have been in the papers about 3, maybe 4 years ago, you help her get over that, and I'll give you free protection, or whatever you want, if she doesn't get over her fear of her father she's going to kill herself".
Without another word he left and went across the street, seeing Dahlia leaning in the car talking to Rebus, and waited.

rise up to do thy biddingThe snake demon relaxed visibly as Kenny left them, blue eyes narrowed as they followed his progress back to the mission. Glancing back up at Dahlia as she stood outside the car, he allowed his gaze to wander down over her body critically. She was too thin, and there were new lines of strain around her eyes. For a moment a strange emotion pierced him in the chest... one he could not name but which had he known it was regret.
He shook his head slowly, unsure of things where not so very long ago those same things had been solid in his mind. He should be concentrating on his master's plans, not worrying about one small and insignificant individual who should mean nothing to him. He was a servant of evil, not a Man with human frailties.
"Eric is good at his job," he stated flatly, a frown deepening the creases in his lines forehead. "You... you're too..."
Young? She had grown up very quickly indeed from the frightened child he had first known...
Temperamental? She was hot-headed, true, but that was no bad thing - when it counted she was stoic in the face of adversity.
Valuable? Only to him. To anyone else she was just another hired gun - they were plentiful if you looked in the right places.
So why all this subtefuge and double-dealing? What was she saying? Trust her... Could he? Not truly, not with everything, not yet.
But she was talking, and the things she was saying were lulling him, weakening his resolve... until that last... Kenny, the little shit. He'd never liked the guy. But she seemed to care about him. Maybe that was his leverage.
"Get in the fucking car," he growled, reaching out to grab her. "Your little boyfriend is the one who'll get a bullet in his head if he's not fucking careful. If you don't want his brains plastered all over the pavement you get in this car right now."
Of course, he could just send his thugs to take her, and there was nothing she, Kenny, or anyone else could do to stop them, but he had never had to force Dahlia to anything and he didn't want to start now. Right from the start there had been something different about her. But she should know him as well as he knew her by now, and she should know just when she had pushed the wrong buttons. Donn did not take kindly to threats, secondhand or not.

Tyson remained quiet when Kenny closed in on him. Tell his boss? Why should he? This guy meant nothing to him, but he did mean something to Dahlia. Can he get away with not telling him?
He contemplated the idea for a while, and decided agaisnt it. What else could he do?
Oh lord he was exausted, could barely stand straight.

Dahlia looked into his now cold blue eyes, she knew that look well. She had made it a game to see how much she push his buttons, how far she could push him, and the look was a warning that he had enough, that his temper was about to show its ugly face. She knew if she didn't comply with him other people would get hurt. "Ok Donn" she said softly.
She heard the doors close behind her and she tried to stand up to look behind her but his grip on her wrist only tightened, to the point she thought he'd break it, so she could only look over her shoulder to try to see. It was Kenny and he was heading back across the street. She waited until he neared the car, "Kenny give me my cell" she said. He looked at her oddly, as if wondering why she didn't come over to him, then came over.
He handed back her cell and shoved a pill bottle in her hand. "Take these, have you taken one yet?" he asked, as his eyes saw Donn gripping her wrist and the look on Kenny's face said all too clear what he'd like to do to Donn. "Um.." she said thinking as she threw them down in the seat. She took out her beretta gun and handed it to Kenny, "Can you take the round out please? Yeah..um..I did take one but I threw up, so I guess I should take another" she said. She knew better then to have one in the chamber around Rebus unless she was working. Kenny pumped the gun and the bullet flew out into the street, and Dahlia put the gun back in waist of her pj's.
"Yes, you should take one now doll" Kenny said in a firm tone. Dahlia nodded and said "I'll call you later" before getting in the car. Kenny sighed and nodded, closing the car door.
Dahlia took out the pill bottle and put a pill on her tongue swallowing it dry. She breathed a sigh of relief at sitting down, standing took a lot of effort, she was exhausted. She put her cell on vibrate and contemplated whether to call her contact or wait till later.

Julian offered a slow nod at Kenny's words. His head felt flooded with various emotions. That so much trouble was centered around Dahlia seemed almost impossible.
He felt pity for the girl, and a sense of worry at Kenny's words. Everyone has a past, whether good or bad, yet it seemed hers was a very real threat to not only her sobriety, but her sanity as well.
Again, a voice in the back of his head whispered about trouble he could ill afford. Already there had been guns drawn and pointed, very real threats made, and the a sense that violence could have broken out at any moment. To add to that, Dahlia's boss was some gang leader...capable of commanding assasins.
Yet Julian pushed his doubt aside. As a priest...he had a duty to offer God's love and mercy to whom ever asked it. This duty felt heavier then ever, to be sure...yet he knew that the duty still remained.
"I will do my best to help her, tell Dahlia she will always be welcome here." Julian offered in return to Kenny before he shot out the door to deliever her things.
Turning to his mentor Phillip, Julian offered a tired smile.
"Want some coffee? I'm sure we have much to talk about."

is there a God up there?Phillip was rather disconcerted at the appearance of a gun, and wore a pained expression as the scene unfolded. Despite his colourful career so far, he found himself pleased to be attached to a church in a safer part of town, albeit only slightly.
At Julian's suggestion of coffee he nodded his head in relief, glad of some normality at last in the thus far extraordinary day.
"Does this sort of thing happen often?" he asked as he followed the younger man to the kitchen, a bemused frown on his face.
